Another thing I liked about SW:tFA was (spoilers)

it gave the first 45mins or so to the new characters. It gave them plenty of script space to establish themselves before they could be compared to the original characters. It was done so well that I wasn't fidgeting, waiting for characters I knew and liked. The new characters were as interesting as any of the originals and that bodes well for the rest of the series.
