I BB'd a bit and I have a thought on one of the questions raised (STRW7 spoils)

The question of why R2 woke up.
R2 has literally one purpose in the film. Only one. And that is to show the (incomplete, later completed through BB-8) map that leads to Luke. What's interesting to me about this is that R2 doesn't wake up when BB-8 arrives with the missing piece of the map. Clearly there's something else R2 is waiting for.
R2 awakes almost simultaneously to the moment when Rey arrives on the Resistance planet where R2 is located. It's true that Finn arrives at the same time, but he's unconscious and other than bravery there's nothing about him that would be interesting to Luke.
No, R2's awakening is connected to Rey. Again, there's something interesting about that. R2 is a droid. He doesn't see Rey, nor is he in her presence. But somehow he knows she's arrived on the planet. Presumably he's sensing her through the Force. But how? He's a droid. Droids can't use the Force.
This makes no sense. Until you think back to Rey's vision in Kanata's basement. One of the things we saw in her vision--and also glimpsed the trailers--is Luke deliberately placing his hand on R2.
My theory is that when Luke went into exile, he not only gave R2 the map of how to find him (save a missing piece of it--this part is odd) but imbued in R2 some element of his Force powers. Luke would only re-enter the chessboard and allow himself to be found if R2 sensed the Force's return through a new player. When Rey arrives on the Resistance planet, R2 senses Rey, wakes up and is able to execute his instructions from Luke. Rey is able to find Luke, arrives as an unpolished Force user, and this gives Luke an opportunity for redemption for his failure with his nephew.
