It goes back to RotJ. When R2 is on the Barge. Based on Luke signalling, R2 was able to pass Luke his lightsaber at a key moment before the Sarlacc was to have him.
Luke was at the controls of R2 all along. Hans death and emergence of Rey changed things.
Luke is like Ben Kenobi and Yoda of this story. He senses all Force related stuff
