I forget who asked if Star Wars:TFA would help or hurt other films this weekend. For holdovers, it crushed them.

Every non-platform holdover dropped over 50%. 7 of them dropped over 60%. 3 over 70%. It's bigger drops overall than the weekend after Thanksgiving had.

Didn't help that everything but In the Heart of the Sea lost a ton of screens. -- nm

That's part of it, for sure. I've never seen weekend with the screen count crunch to this effect before. -- nm

With screen saturation there's no more "X is sold out, let's go see Y effect" -- nm

Was that ever more than a theory, though? I never saw evidence in numbers to support it. -- nm

The effect hasn't existed for a long time due to saturation. I wonder what % of Star Wars showings sold out.

I remember seeing it anecdotally, too. But I think any true effect it had on a film's overall box office was cancelled by loss of screens.

It doesn't have to be all showings. It can be primetime showings to have the same effect. -- nm
