Look at what has happened in the former Soviet Union.
Communism fell, the Soviet Union broke up into 15 countries. Some became democracies and integrated into the West (NATO, EU, etc), some became democracies in name, or outright dictatorships (Kazakhstan, Belarus, Turkmenistan, etc).
Meanwhile, in Russia the transition to democracy has not run smoothly - Yeltsin was a buffoon, state assets were sold to cronies who became rich, people got nostalgic for the USSR days when they just did what they were told, etc.
Now we have a strong-man in power, democratic institutions - the courts, the media, etc - are being eroded, proxy wars and invasions of countries that want to move closer to the West (Ukraine and Georgia), etc
All in 25 years.
