1. Yes, JJ gave a weird, not terribly fulfilling answer to why R2 awoke when he did. But if he gave a better answer, then he's giving out a much more spoilery answer. He may have been erring on the side of not spoiling things for moviegoers at the expense of a better answer.
2. Why I think Ren is Rey's brother:
-Luke and Leia are twins. Thematically, I think you need force sensitive twins in this set of stories.
-Having a brother and sister at odds is more straightforward than cousins at odds.
-If that scene of Rey and Leia at the end wasn't a mother/daughter reunion, then there was no reason to have Leia there.
-Han and Leia could easily have put her into hiding at a young enough age that Han didn't recognize her. And if they had someone else choose the hiding place (keeps Ren from getting the info from Mom and Dad), then they'd have no idea this girl from Jakku is their daughter.
-Rey's connection to the Skywalker line is equally strong through Luke or Leia.
If Luke needs an offspring in these films, then Poe could easily be his son. Just because Luke is his father would not mean he would be Jedi material. After all, Leia is only somewhat Force-sensitive and Anakin was her father, too. Remember, Luke was a hotshot pilot, too.
