I think it's a bit different for pitchers. If the majors had a Best Hitter Award (aka The Trout), it'd be a much cleaner situation.

When three teams in one division win/approach 100 victories, a guy on an 83-win team simply cannot be the most valuable player in the league. It's a failure of lexicon.
I'm a bit surprised baseball doesn't introduce the third award. They'd have another star to build around each season.
