Ren thinks he's a good guy. Driver says he's playing him like he's trying to do what's best for everyone, not just power-hungry and evil for the sake of being evil.
he's also not very good at being dark side. he's trying really hard, but he's not fully committed, I don't think. like the constant whacking himself in the blaster wound, and the rage outbursts are him trying to embrace the dark side but not quite managing.
