The characters don't need to know motivation for the act. But to leave the audience without some sort of lead up makes it less effective. It's sloppy writing.
House is right that there are *always* signs. Always. They just get missed or misinterpreted. They discussed any number of things it *could* have been, but this is the first time we ever saw any of Kutner's outside life so it all rang false. The writers never established anything other than his status as an adopted child and the death of his parents. They hung the suicide on a coathook we'd never seen before last night, then they kept the hook hidden from us.
