Was commenting on Consumerist this morning how I think diamonds are a complete waste of money. Am I completely off base?

I commented that "they're just a symbol of your adherence to vapid, superficial social norms. It's stupid." There are so many better ways to spend your money even if it's to show commitment. And for those who save up to buy a diamond, why not be saving up for other things such as a car or house or, I don't know, anything more useful than a small piece of rock?

Debeers controls the flow which controls the prices. They are supposedly not that rare as they are marketed to be. -- nm

I certainly don't see anything wrong with buying one of the new synthetic ones.

there are many gemstones that I like more than diamonds. unless they are cut to have maximum sparkle they look plain compared to coloured stones. -- nm

Are you talking about a ring? I think they meant buying a bunch of diamonds and just hoarding them in a safe deposit box. -- nm
