The way I understand it, its an archaic way to make sure guys dont take proposals too lightly

Otherwise guys would propose and break off proposals (at least back in the day :) ) once they get what they wanted. Its something that a girl who is tainted (who knows what the social norms were) with a broken off engagement can at least have the money from the ring. I think if the guy breaks it off they girl gets to keep the ring right?
