actually the only reason diamonds have become a staple for engagement rings is because of an ad campaign the De Beers group started

in the early 20th century. Before that, diamonds were not that popular from what I understand.
The slogan 'Diamonds are Forever' is often touted as the greatest advertising campaign to date.
