Disney World advice: What are the advantages to renting a house near the park vs. taking a package deal to stay on the resort?

The cost difference between the hotels and renting a house is enormous. The houses seem way more comfortable. I get that I'd need to spend more on the passes, and a rental car if we rent a house, but are there other hidden costs or issues?

Time in the park - I don't think you'd be able to get in as early as if you stayed in the resort, nor stay as late - prayformojo Jan 4, 05:08
on resort (at least when we were there) get access to the Parks 1/2 hour earlier on some days and can stay 1/2 later on others - Beaker Jan 4, 04:51
