A lot comes down to your budget.

If you want to stay for the cheapest amount and spend most of your money on souvenirs and other park stuff, getting a cheap condo can make some sense. You'll have to rent a car and pay for parking, which are prices to factor in.
Following up on some b2 comments, staying at a Disney hotel provides you with some additional benefits. Kim mentions Magical Express. Here's an article that describes what this is:

Beaker mentions a half-hour of extra park time. It's actually an hour. Disney offers that hour every day, either in the morning or at night. The theme park varies, although they occasionally do one in the morning and one at night. So, you could get into Epcot an hour early one day then stay at Magic Kingdom an hour late another. The crowds will be small at these points, so you'll get to enjoy more rides. The downside is that it's either an early start or a very late day.
The downside of not staying onsite is that you're completely at the mercy of park transportation. You also will be wasting a lot of time if you don't intend to spend an entire day at the park. Traveling back and forth will involve walking to your car, waiting in traffic for park exits, and driving back to your hotel/condo.
The one option I'd suggest instead if you don't mind paying a bit more is renting Disney Vacation Club points. Here's an article I wrote on this:

If budget is an issue, consider Animal Kingdom Villas or Old Key West, although at this juncture, you're late to the party so availability will determine a lot. *five minutes later* Okay, I just checked. Animal Kingdom Villas, Old Key West, Boardwalk, and Beach Club Villas (my suggestion) are all available. The price range for these would be between $1,764 and $2,184. Note that this number includes tax, and it's for the full week (March 28-April 3). If that's beyond your budget, that's completely understandable. If you're still interested, these are the nicest resorts at WDW, and I can give you feedback on the pros and cons of each.
