I think I'd get agreement with the person about what to see. My trip to DC was for 5 days and I still only saw about 2/3 of what I wanted

My other suggestion is "prepare for information overload". Whether you're visiting the Capitol or the Smithsonian, there's so much to take in. By my 4th day, I was beat.
