I live in the city and pretty much walk/bike everywhere, so I'm happy to help. I definitely recommend a day on the Mall, which will be nice, but there's other fun stuff too outside the main tourist areas. Full disclosure I did a walking tour of the monuments (not museums) with family and it took hours, so I might recommend the bike share if you do that sort of thing. I'd also recommend seeing the Naval Observatory, Embassy Row, and Postal Museum (think of it as he logistics museum for the US). The Wharf and President Lincoln's cottage would be a second tier.
