I think they did Fred Johnson's backstory well, given they changed it fairly significantly from the book.
It was a more boots on the ground operation in the books.
But they do show that Holden and Johnson have similar feelings about Earth and Mars and their approach to Belters and the Outer Planets. Neither particularly want to be the boot, though Johnson doesn't mind being the fist of the OPA.
