I think his actions detracted from his abilities. If he weren't such a knucklehead, he might have a shot.

but he has way too many things NOT in his favor here, and it is a shame, because as JUST a ballplayer, he was fantastic.

We don't *really* know about Bonds. And there's a bump in performance for Manny around 98/99. -- (edited)

If it were just based on stats, Manny is a lock. His overall hitting stats are slightly better than Frank Thomas'. -- nm*

Manny's numbers are superficially better, but when you account for park effects, I think Thomas is the slightly better hitter.

I think Thomas was a better hitter in his prime, but his prime didn't last nearly as long as Manny's did. -- nm

Manny's longevity is presumably at least partially due to his failed tests.

Thomas was a scarier hitter than Manny. That's difficult to quantify, but Sheff and him had a presence that differentiated them from other sluggers. -- nm

For a time, yes. But in 1998, 99, 2002, 2004, 2005 he was just a decent hitter those years.

the whole "Manny being Manny" thing was the worst thing that could have happened to him.
