It's because Clemson sold out on the run most plays.

Alabama cleverly exploited that with the TE faking blocks and then releasing downfield. Kiffin called a championship winning game.
Also, Clemson forced Coker to beat them. To his credit, he did...but it wasn't pretty for three quarters.
