in the general arena of 'cancer sucking', if you were wondering what's happening with my friend:

for those of you that might care...

her tumors are still growing, the last chemo wasn't doing much except making her feel exhausted and sick. (there was only a 25% chance it was going to work.)

she's been hospitalized with pain a few times in the past months, and that seems to be a result of tumors on her spleen.

Monday she is having her spleen removed (well, assuming her blood work is still okay on Friday.) This is actually pretty scary, because when she had surgery two years ago, she found out much later she almost didn't survive that, and that future surgery was ruled out. But here we are (there is really no other way to stop the pain, other than morphine, and they don't want her dependent on that.)

no more chemo - but she might try a immunotherapy trial once she recovers from surgery. but that's a 6-8 week recovery.

Monday, surgery-day, is also her daughter's 9th birthday. Her daughter (who is off the charts, literally, smart - which is actually not helpful in this case) is convinced mom is going to die on her birthday.

it's all so sucky.

what is hard to wrap your head around is, she really doesn't LOOK sick, i saw her on Sunday.

In this pic from the weekend - she's the grown-up on the far right. Her daughter (with her growing out mohawk) is in front of her.
