I just saw your comment about being done with cars. that limits your options here.

not impossible, but it makes the "whole bay area is your backyard" thing much harder. it depends on specific areas for day-to-day things; but, beyond that, there's a lot of driving. public transportation, uber, rentals, zipcar vs. having your own car - I just don't know.
