LIR: colin ... cost of living in Portland ...

Cost of living overall is decent, especially if you don't need a car. And I haven't had to own a car since returning here from DC ten years ago. I'm signed up with Zipcar and Car2Go, and I take the bus to work every day (it's about a 20 minute ride).

Plus, as I'm sure you've heard, Portland is consistently one of the top 5 (if not #1) bike-friendly cities in the country.

The big cost is housing. Portland had the hottest housing market in the country last year, and we're projected to be at the top again this year.

Rental housing is scarce and prices are starting to approach rental prices in Seattle. For you and Anne, a one-bedroom apartment somewhere near downtown is going to run you $1,200 to $1,500 (for something decent). You can find more reasonably priced apartments in the western suburbs along the light rail line for about $900 to $1,000.

But overall, the Portland cost of living is on par with Phoenix or Denver, slightly lower than Seattle, and much lower than the Bay Area.
