"As larger jackpots draw more customers, the chance that someone will win shoots up. But so does the chance of multiple winners, which lowers the expected value of a ticket. Powerball’s organisers predict that when the draw takes place roughly 85% of all possible numerical combinations will have been bought, suggesting sales of some 560m tickets. If there is a winner, there is a roughly 67% chance that the pot will be split, compared with just 4% for more typical sales of 25m tickets."
