"discipline" was the answer when I asked why we were made to do super similar problems by hand over and over, when inexpensive calculators did the work in seconds; so on I went.
that was analytical geometry and calculus - the only class I ever dropped out of, solely because of content. I didn't really need it for my likely majors, which also was a thing; but I would have stuck it out if it wasn't so darned drudgey. (he was a nice guy, I remember thinking the content wasn't his choice.)
