Nuclear fallout isn't so far removed given what happened at the end. The question really is, what could they possible add to the "story" of Cloverfield from 3 people in a bunker? The whole movie basically was people running around the main action. It's not like the girl escaping the bunker is going to take on Cloverfield monster...
Given that, yeah, it seems like a bit of a money grab because you can't really make a "cloverfield" movie based on three people in a bunker. It could be set in the same universe but it isn't in any way going to be related to the action
