I had to read the story you linked multiple times - the headline focused on closures; but they're opening a whole bunch, too.

they also included already closed stores in the big number.
so they're closing a bunch of not-so-profitable stores, including a number of the smaller version; but opening more smaller ones and 50-60 supercenters, plus some sam's clubs. it's an overall shift, and it's not like they're sears.
