Part of the problem is that standard DNS allows you to do things with hostnames like www that aren't easy to do with just the domain name.

Amazon Route53 DNS fixes this a bit, but it can sometimes still be a hassle. I'm talking about CNAME records or even pointing to a farm of IP addresses for round-robin server load balancing.
