I'd guess a lot of us remember his name (vs. just roles) because of late night talk show appearances.

doing stand-up bits and as a guest, he was fantastic. (may still be, but I haven't regularly watched anything but clips from late night shows in the past few years.)
from johnny carson to letterman and on - when I had a way to record, if I saw he'd be a guest, I'd make a point of recording or watching even shows I didn't regularly watch (conan, etc.).
