The gist of it is my step-father didn't want kids. My mother wanted to be taken care of. I moved out (I never got along with him).

We had maybe 2 phone conversations after that with my mother, the last time, gloating that she was moving somewhere good and that she wasn't going to tell me. I said, fine. And that was that until I called her. So, basically, no contact my entire adult life.
That's the short version. The long version includes them institutionalizing my sister not too long after I moved out. So he managed to get rid of both kids. My mother seemed happy with that. Well, that's my assumption since she made no effort to contact me. I only reached out because I was doing ancestry.com and wanted some names from her (German) side of the family. That branch of my tree is extremely short.
