I will freely admit there are still miles to go to equality/parity both at an Oscar level and most importantly, an industry level

I don't see the basis though to protest "OscarSoWhite" which is a specific event in time, when your best evidence of the failure is Idris Elba didn't get nominated when he was consistently in the top 5 of his category predictions. That's a snub but also not an extreme one given the other circumstances.

If the Oscars are old and white and resistant to change, how eager do you think they'll be to celebrate the same-day VOD concept?

Let's remember that it's an rich white man party, and they probably aren't going to be happy that the protests are overshadowing their marquee party to themselves in the absence of truly unequivocable proof of bias.

For all the completely valid critiques of the issue, progress is being made, slowly and protesting an event because it's a marquee event run by the guys hiring doesn't seem to be the wisest course of opening new opportunities.

All movements need to pick and choose the best bang for their protest buck and I don't think the 2016 Oscars are strategically that case for ease of explaining away the quality candidates.
