They flexed their muscles and got rid of a guy they wanted out. Nobody is saying they have the power on their own to acheive all their goals, but

they can undermine and cause significant destruction and then use the fear that they create to change behaviors. It's happened time and again. They are the terrorists of the party. They are perfectly happy to blow the place up. They have dragged the party much further right than it was before they got into the mix (and it was pretty far right at that point already).
