I have felt embarrassed showing up under-dressed and it ruins the night for me. I feel awkward and out of place so I don't enjoy myself.

You can't be over-dressed for the opera in NYC so I say go all out and dress to the nines. I also feel good when I'm looking good and have a much more enjoyable evening.
Also, I'm a gentleman. ;-)
