by most metrics, Rubio would be a viable national candidate; as would Christie and a few of the Governors who sat this out.
We will see the same thing in the Democrats come 2020/2024 as the recent elections have destroyed an entire generation of Democratic hopefuls. The only senators safe are either blue-state senators, or ones who got lucky with absurd Tea-Party challengers.
It takes time to replenish the bench after disasterous elections like 2006/2008/2010/2014 for one party.
