Sorry about the job, but I can think of much worse places to spend 16 weeks than Singapore at least.

Though alcohol isn't cheap in the main there.

We did wind up at an outdoor food court, kinda like those places with lots of food trucks with picnic tables set up around them, except these weren't trucks, they were permanent stalls. It seemed to cater to locals, but the beer was cheap (for Singapore) and there was some good food too.
