I only ever had issues when using the ones supposedly designed for recessed lighting fixtures

Those burned out so regularly that until LEDs became available I replaced them with incandescents.
The one thing I LOVE about LEDs is that they list lumens. That is such an improvement over the old watts measurement as a guess for light output.
