Oh, he's being very successful, but he underperformed his poll numbers leading to the caucus.

Had he come in third, he'd have spun that as a win. If he'd been last, he'd have spun that as a win.
There is no situation, in his mind, where he is not the winner, regardless of the actual outcome.
