I'm certainly not suggesting he's the only influence, but considering he influenced the beatles as well it's an extremely significant role in rock

history. There are lots of influences. I still put the Who ahead of Zeppelin in terms of influence personally, but he is at the core of it. No artist is influence by only one artist, but his influence is tangible (and cited) by many who would also cite the Beatles, the blues, etc. as influences. He is one of a handful of core influences of rock music. Both in songwriting and production.
BTW, if you haven't seen Love and Mercy it's worth a watch. Good movie and shows the unfortunate reasons his catalogue isn't even bigger. Interestingly he won a grammy as recently as 2011. He's actually found his creativity again in the last 10-15 years and has been producing interesting stuff.
All of this said, I think the Beach Boys without him are sort of a novelty act at this point. A fun oldies band. But his role in rock history in general is impossible to deny as one of (not THE, but ONE OF) the seminal influences of the genre and spanning into areas beyond what you would expect at a glance.
