I freely admit on B2, when it came up, that Wilson is influential. He and the Beatles influenced each other.
There's influence and then there's legacy. People go through various singer/band phases. I suggest that the only folks going through a Brian Wilson or even a Beach Boys phase are hardcore musicniks. The music is not built to last while the what it contributed is oddly going to be sensed for generations. They won't know what they're referencing but it will likely be. the music itself was/is quintessential light pop.
Meanwhile, kids will always pick up "St. Pepper" or "Led Zepplin II" or "Tommy".
