I spent a few minutes looking for album sales by year to compare and couldn't find them.

Conversely I think you're affection for the music, which is catchy and makes everyone feel like it's a beach party, is clouding your assessment.
People don't go through beach boys phases. Case in point: Here's selections from the wiki's on both of the recent release from the BB and then the Beatles. they struggle to say things about the BB, comparing the recent release's success against past releases and strain to find something significant (#15 on the Canadian charts). Meanwhile the Beatles broke the record for most countries debuted at #1 (uncited). I pick the Beatles because it's the easiest to pick but I don't mean to turn it into BB vs. the Beatles. My guess is the Led Zepplin would turn out similarly.
Commercial performance[edit]
It debuted at No. 3 and became the group's highest charting album in 37 years—since 1974's compilation Endless Summer and highest charting studio album since 1965's Summer Days (And Summer Nights!!). It also became the band's first top 10 studio album since 1976's 15 Big Ones and the highest debuting album of their entire career.[39] The album made its debut in the UK charts at number 15 giving the group their highest studio album debut since 1971's Surf's Up. The album debuted at number 15 on the Canadian Albums Chart.[40]"
"Sales and chart performance[edit]
The reception of 1 surpassed all critical and commercial expectations. It reached No. 1 in over 35 countries, achieving the record for the album debuting at the top of the most national charts ever.[citation needed] It became the highest-selling of 2000 and later, of the entire decade.[citation needed] This achievement made the Beatles the first and only artist to have the best-selling albums of two different decades. They also had the best-selling album of the 1960s, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.[citation needed] No tracks from Sgt. Pepper appear on this album. With this album, the Beatles also achieved having an album hit the No. 1 position in the US in four non-consecutive decades (1960s, 1970s, 1990s and 2000s)."
