The Beatles are a terrible comparison. They have closely guarded their catalogue and stopped performing together forever in 1970. The Beach Boys

never stopped. The Beatles scarcity always made them more "collectible". The Beach Boys have dozens of greatest hits compilations. So comparing One to the sales of a "new" Beach Boys album is hardly a comparison. But you won't find any list of the greatest rock albums of all times that doesn't have Pet Sounds in the top 5. Often the top 3. That says something. Far more than you're willing to give credit for. If your sole argument is that they aren't the Beatles, I concede that point. The Beatles are the most influential band of all time. Agreed. But it's not nothing that McCartney often cites Wilson's influence and references Pet Sounds as one of the greatest influences on him. The Beatles were not the only great influence in rock and pop. Brian Wilson is in that class among the handful of greatest influences out there. It's not just my affection for the music. It really isn't. I think you'd be hard pressed to find many rock historians who would disagree.
