I mean, those two were contemporaries and don't sound alike so it doesn't...

(I know a magazine once said they did. They're wrong)
but judging The Beach Boys off of, say, Surfin USA, is like judging the Beatles off of I Wanna Hold Your Hand. The thing that always gets me about some of the bands in that time period is how rapidly they shifted. It was like 4 years between their debut and Pet Sounds. The Beatles were like 3 years between Ed Sullivan and Rubber Soul. They were all like 24 and rewrote the language of pop music.
