not to lessen the woo, but:

I know headphones are better in some ways; but almost the only time I use earphones is my occasional listening to something at work (which is back to being infrequent again), and I need to be able to hear my phone (plus not get scared by people walking up to my office), so they can't be really sound-blocking.

if I'm able to fly again, they'll be great.
