2 things I'm pondering about Room (spoilers)

I was half expecting Old Nick to have gone back to the room and hurt Joy. Given how obviously twisted he was, I thought there was a chance he'd harm/rape/whatever.

Also, I didn't really understand the point of the father's reluctance to look at or speak to the kid. It was brought up and then dropped like a hot potato.
