I agree there's a path, but he has to remain relevant, win the governorship, do a good enough job

and hope that other potential candidates aren't around in eight years.
While if he hadn't resigned his Senate seat, as the most viable establishment candidate, he'd become the default option for 2020 after the insurgency fires have hopefully burned out. Essentially it would be the same path Romney took in 2012, but fewer people would be "anyone but Rubio"
