I disagree slightly...

while there was mingling of groups the greater concern was that a trusted group would have a jihadist or pro-government member in their midst. But what we never did was get enough covert services in the country to really start getting to know each of the groups. Think what you will about our intervention in Afghanistan but one thing the CIA did brilliantly was vetting everyone and getting them exactly what they needed as quickly as possible. They managed to womp up on a massive military with a single class of weapon. granted, Casey didn't have the considerations we do now but still they did it really effectively. We reacted very cautiously.
