Important update: I'm now caught up on the best film nominees. Ranking inside.

8. Bridge of Spies - Liked it a fair amount, but pretty standard stuff.

7. Mad Max - An extremely well-crafted action movie, but I feel like it would have garnered much less praise if it hadn't been directed by an 80 year-old legend. The title character is almost fatally bland and uninvolved.

6. The Martian - Again, another well-crafted film. There was an emotional component missing for me, however, which was surprising.

5. The Big Short - Didn't love it as much as most. Lots of unlikable, interchangeable characters. Fascinating story, but man, it left me cold. Perfectly fine with it winning screenplay.

4. Room - Been over this on ST. Great first half let down by a standard conclusion.

3. Brooklyn - Better than I expected, but maybe missing a little oomph to push it into true greatness. I actually think Ronan deserves to win over Larson. I feel like a lot of young actresses could have played Brie's role, but not many could pull off Ronan's.

2. Spotlight - Extremely...competent. Seemingly low praise for my #2 pick, but I don't know how else to put it. Everything about it is *very good* and nothing is *great.*

1. Revenant - It just worked for me. I had a dumb smile on my face almost the entire time. And then while watching the movie as well.
