he had almost entirely the right idea in the beginning - Glass should not have been able to recover from his injuries, and lugging him around was a great way to get the rest of them dead. It's not like there was a hospital around the corner, and it probably looked like needless torture to him. Murdering his son is obviously where he crossed the line, but it's against extreme odds that Glass even survived to be able to attempt that insane journey back.
