My (evolving) belief is that he entered the race in order to give a voice to progressive ideas and to (he hoped/hopes) set the stage for a more progressive Democratic party in years to come.

What I'm not sure on is if he's a genius who knew this would resonate so well or if he's as surprised as I am but how successful he's been
