Assume Trump is going to win the nom but lose the general. Christie (if he hadn't endorsed) could have gone into lobbying

until such time as the GOP wins the house, and then get a staff or diplomatic position.
But if Trump loses the general, Christie endorsement will haunt him when/if the establishment gets back into the White House
It's a calculated gamble he didn't need to make at this point.
