X-Files aside, it was either poorly written or horribly edited, or both.

It's like Chris Carter and crew had never filmed for tv (or movies) before. It used cheap or sloppy tropes like the voiceover recap at the beginning, Monica's flashback, and the Internet videos as a mechanism to advance the narrative quickly. It was an exercise in "We don't have time for cinematic exposition. Let's just summarize it here." You pull this shit in film school and you get a failing grade.
